Education in search, right now

Of the 60 highest-volume UK education searches we checked, 44 show a Google AI Overview and only one shows an ad. The biggest terms are owned by Student Finance and UCAS, so a university competes on course, open day and clearing searches, where the result is decided by how well its own pages are structured and how early they are indexed before the peak.

How education search got here

University sites are large, old and run by many hands, which is why each Google update has found something to punish. Here is what each one changed.

YearGoogle updateWhat it meant for education
2011PandaUniversity sites with thousands of thin course and module pages saw them stop ranking.
2012PenguinThe link-buying shortcuts some agencies sold to universities stopped working, and some became penalties.
2013HummingbirdQuestions like “what grades do I need for nursing” started to be answered directly, often from the best-structured course page.
2015Mobile-friendly updateProspective students were already searching on phones. Slow, desktop-only prospectus sites were demoted.
2018Medic core updateAdvice on finance, health and careers was held to a higher standard of expertise, including student finance and careers content.
2019BERTLong applicant questions were understood as questions.
2022Helpful content updateGeneric “why study X” pages written for rankings lost ground to pages that answered applicants properly.
2024AI Overviews (UK, August)AI answers arrived on course and clearing questions. 73% of top education searches now carry one.
2025AI ModeApplicants can hold a full conversation about courses. The pages cited are the ones that state facts plainly: entry requirements, fees, dates.

Questions education clients ask

When should clearing SEO work start?

Months before results day. Pages need to be live, indexed and linked internally before August, because Google and AI answers draw on what they have already crawled. For Greenwich, the work began in May 2021 and every target clearing term was on page one by August 2022.
