Data limits: PIPR estimates the average rent across all private tenancies, new and existing, including tenancies that began years ago, so it is not the asking rent for a new let on a property portal. The figures are mix adjusted statistical estimates from administrative rent data, not a count of actual rents, and ONS labels them official statistics in development. Every month ONS revises the two most recent monthly estimates for the UK as the Northern Ireland data arrive; ONS says this is the only regular revision of PIPR and that it applies only to the UK series. England and Wales are published by local authority. Scotland is published for 18 broad rental market areas, not council areas, and its data are mainly advertised new lets, so ONS advises care when comparing it with other countries. Northern Ireland is published for 8 broad rental market areas and its data reach ONS two months later, so this release has no Northern Ireland figures for August or September 2026 and the UK figure for those months includes an ONS estimate for Northern Ireland. ONS does not publish figures for the Isles of Scilly or the City of London because of low collection volumes. Figures below region level are three month moving averages, which ONS applies to reduce volatility caused by low data collection, and ONS advises reading them against longer term trends rather than monthly movements. Annual change is the ONS index change on the same month a year earlier, so it can differ slightly from the change between the rounded rents. Rents are rounded to the nearest pound and are not seasonally adjusted.
